Peek partners with Sightsavers in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ major new Vision Initiative

Peek Vision is working with Sightsavers to expand access to eye care in Nigeria and Kenya, thanks to transformative support from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Vision Initiative.

Bloomberg Philanthropies is investing US$75 million in organisations across the sector, including Sightsavers, to boost services and help address the global vision crisis.

Through the Vision Initiative, Sightsavers will improve access to eye care in Kenya and Nigeria by carrying out millions of eye tests and ensuring people who need them can access glasses.

The programme aims to build sustainable health care systems and support long-term government investment in the two countries. It will also contribute to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global target to achieve a 40 percentage point increase in effective coverage of refractive error services by 2030.

Sightsavers will work with Peek, local partners, and ministries of health and education to deliver the programme. Using Peek’s software and data insights, they will provide vision screening at scale and monitor the numbers of people attending their referrals and receiving a pair of glasses.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this project,” says Farhana Rehman-Furs, Peek’s Head of Global Partnerships. “Our software will bring vision screening into schools and communities, while timely data insights help ensure those who need glasses and other treatments can get them. Combined with Sightsavers’ deep expertise in eye health, and collaboration from local partners and government, together we can break down barriers to care so more people can learn, work and thrive.”

“This important investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies comes at a critical time for eye health,” says Andrew Bastawrous, co-Founder and CEO of Peek Vision. “Despite the fact that simple solutions exist, more than a billion people still live with avoidable vision loss, and that number is growing. The huge gap between need and investment is striking, and underlines why new support is so important. Peek is so fortunate to work with innovative partners like Sightsavers, as well as our own visionary donors. Collectively, we’re accelerating solutions to the global vision crisis – it can’t come soon enough.”
