We have decided to permanently close sales of Peek Retina, our pioneering low-cost smartphone optical imaging hardware.  Sales will close on 28 September 2020.

We are proud of what we have achieved with Peek Retina.  When it launched to market in 2017 it was one of the first devices of its kind and it remains the only universal smartphone eye camera developed specifically to address the huge unmet need in low- and middle-income countries.

However, for Peek Retina to achieve an impact in the future that is in line with our ambitions, it requires substantial further investment of time and funds.  Since Peek Retina launched, Peek Solutions – our data capture and analysis systems – have taken off.  They are now being used in multiple locations to support school and community eye health programmes and population eye health surveys, with more locations coming online later this year.

Investing in our software development, programme delivery and operations to support Peek Solutions will make a bigger contribution to achieving our mission than investing in the necessary technical developments, marketing and sales infrastructure needed for Peek Retina to meet its potential.

Given the global uncertainty caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that we consolidate our resources so that we can maximise our impact on avoidable vision loss worldwide.  As such, we have decided to close sales of Peek Retina, so that we can focus on Peek Solutions for eye health programmes and continue building on the great impact we have already achieved with our partners in the last few years.

Following the closure of sales on 28 September, we will collate all of our existing resources for Peek Retina users on our website so that existing users have ongoing access to online guidance and support if they need it.  We will do our best to respond to any enquiries which we receive regarding Peek Retina after sales close, but may not be able to prioritise them.

Many individuals and organisations have contributed to the development and launch of Peek Retina.  We are thankful to all of them for their support and inspiration along the way. Together, we achieved something truly pioneering.  While Peek is now moving into a new phase of its journey we hope that the lessons we’ve learned from Peek Retina will inspire other mission-driven eye health organisations to further explore the great potential of smartphone-based eye imaging hardware.
