Peek featured in top-rated research impact assessment for London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

"Working to improve health worldwide is a true team effort with researchers working with colleagues and partners to make a real difference to lives through high quality studies and evidence to shape policy and practice" - Prof. Liam Smeeth, LSHTM Director

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has been ranked number one in the UK for research impact in the results of the government's Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).

Peek Vision began life as a research project at LSHTM’s International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) and today retains  strong research links with the institution.  Current collaborations include the RAAB7 eye health survey and a Wellcome-Trust funded project investigating new methods to fast-track eye health service improvements.  Peek was featured as one of twenty impact case studies submitted by LSHTM as part of the assessment.

LSHTM is ranked first for the key measure of impact and joint 10th overall of all universities in the UK.  It was also one of only three institutions found by the REF to be providing a world-leading environment for public health research in the UK.

Professor Liam Smeeth, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "I am proud of each and every person who has contributed to our research activities. Working to improve health worldwide is a true team effort with researchers working with colleagues and partners to make a real difference to lives through high quality studies and evidence to shape policy and practice.”

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 is the system used by the four UK Higher Education funding bodies for assessing research in UK universities. It was first conducted in 2014, and replaced the previous Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The REF 21 exercise is the first assessment since the 2014 round and covers the period to 2020.
